Chapter 9: Party Hard

They skedaddled right the fuck out, right there.

“We need to warn Harly,” Jaz said as they double-timed through the forest.

“Harly might be in that pile,” Pix replied. “Besides, what could she do even if it came for her?”

“Who’s Harly?” the Madmiral asked.

“The Harlequin Mantis,” Jaz replied.

The Madmiral stopped running for that. “You named her?”

“‘Harlequin Mantis’ has too many syllables for casual conversation.”

“No, I mean, she let you name her?”

Jaz shrugged. “I do a good job on her gems.”

“Do you mean you’ve tried to name her before?” Pix asked.

Now the Madmiral turned to face them, eyes hard and bewildered, and said, “The Harlequin Mantis is an eldritch monster.”

Pix and Jaz’s eyes boggled. “She is?”

“Low-tier, as eldritches go, and not incredibly dangerous as long as she’s comfortable. But she’s sentient enough to be dangerous if you insult her, and she’s as arrogant as an heiress.”

Jaz shrugged again. “She seems pretty okay to me,” and suddenly her connection to that bug made so much sense to Pix.

Jaz wasn’t an heiress in practice—after all, having left for the Monstrous Continent, she wasn’t set to inherit anything—but she was from an obnoxiously rich family in which social, courtly gymnastics were as common to daily conversation as shouts and raised flagons were here. For all her outward lack of subtlety, Jaz knew how to play that cutthroat social game, and she loved bugs besides.

There was literally no one better suited to befriend Harly than Jaspartina Red.

“Huh,” the Madmiral said, intrigued, and then turned to continue her run.

Pix and Jaz trotted behind her.

“I think you just startled the Madmiral,” Pix relayed, astonished—then continued, doubly astonished. “Wait, we’re friends with an eldritch monster.”

Jaz shrugged again, inasmuch as one could shrug while running.
